GONG EXPLORATIONS – Exploring touch, tone, and transformation through the art of gong playing.
This 3-day immersion offers a comprehensive study of gong technique, tone, rhythm, and awareness. Participants will refine their sound, develop coordination and hand independence, develop their sonic language and deepen listening.
Focus Areas Include:
• Mallet Work & Grip: Pivot grip, movement, and mallet control for precision and expression.
• Strokes & Techniques: Drone, toning, and two-handed strokes; muting, dampening, and hand independence.
• Tone & Dynamics: Sculpting sound, working with directions of change, and exploring dynamics.
• Rhythm & Time: Developing patterns, timing, and long-form rhythmic endurance.
• Listening & Ensemble Work: Attuning to overtones, space, and group interaction.
• Overtones & Friction: Exploring continuous tones, harmonic layers, and textural soundscapes.
Gong Explorations provides a strong foundation in the language of the gong — cultivating technique, control, and musical awareness through deep listening and hands-on exploration.
